Snow Day Fun

In my 3 snow days...

I finally finished the Christmas Quilt.  It turned out very nice.
I had a lot of left over pieces when I finished the big quilt.  So I made a small quilt that could be a wall hanging or a small crib/baby quilt.
A while back Brian picked out clearance fabric for some pajama pants.  He picked out fabric for two pairs.  One fabric has dinosaurs on it and the other has sock monkeys on it.  I managed to finish the dinosaur ones tonight (minus the metal eyelets I need to feed the drawstring through).
 Finished!!

Sorry Folks Alabama is Closed

Governor Bentley declared a state of emergency on Monday afternoon for the in coming weather on Tuesday, which I laughed about.

Tuesday morning Brian and I were suppose to work at the downtown office, but Brian had been watching the weather and thought best not to leave the house.

At 8:30am Tuesday morning This is how the snow started.

 And it kept accumulating...
Gus had to go out and came back in like this.  He isn't too fond of the snow.
And it kept snowing...  If you look closely it is snowing in this picture.
This is the most snow I have seen since living in Alabama (10 years).

These pictures are some of the pictures I found on Facebook this morning (Wednesday).

This is Hwy 280 in Birmingham.  People had to abandon cars and walk.  Shelters opened up at local churches, people slept in cars and hotel lobby's.  This picture looks like mass chaos and the end of the world.  Most of these were parked cars because they couldn't maneuver the hill.
This is a neighborhood street up by our favorite restaurant Joe's Italian (which is closed today).
I saw this on Facebook this morning and had to laugh because being from Missouri this is so true.
I have friends that live in Pensacola, FL and these are pictures from there. The storm hit them to and everything is closed up.

The street in front of their house in Pensacola.

Palm tree leaning over due to ice.

These are pictures of us playing in the snow this morning.  No snowman because the snow is powdery and wouldn't stick together.
Brian measured almost an inch here at the house.
Gus isn't too sure about all this.

 Gus's little foot prints

He doesn't operate too well on ice!

These are pictures from a guy that works downtown at UAB.

This is Hwy 65 south, which is the way Brian and I would have gone to come home.
People eventually gave up and parked wherever they could find a place.  Some slept in their cars (2 of my doctors and our brace lady slept in their cars last night on 65) and some started walking.
On side streets around the area people parked wherever making the roads one lane in some spots.

I am so Thankful to be safe and warm in my own home right now because 1000's of people aren't.  Schools didn't close early enough and the students weren't able to get home.  Places of business didn't shut down and empolyee's all over slept in offices last night and probably will be staying there tonight as well.  It's just CRAZY!

Jabez wanted outside so I let him out.  I was surprised that he ventured clear out to his favorite spot on the rose beds.

Funny thing about it is next week we will probably be 60 degrees and sunny!

Dog in Training

We caught Gus trying to carry one of my 5lb weights around like a dog bone.  It was pretty funny to watch.  He tries to get it picked up and ends up barking at it.
Once he has it picked up he tries to run with it.  He doesn't have enough weight in the rear end, so he eventually topples over it head first, rolling across the room in a ball.
And then we try it all over again.  So funny to watch, but we picked them up so he wouldn't hurt himself.

Red Beans & Rice

We had Laurie over for dinner tonight.  Red beans and rice with cornbread was on the menu and it must have been good because this is all that is left of a big pot.  Thanks to The Mississippi Marketplace in Hannibal, MO (dry goods store) for a great bag of red beans & rice.  I will be back for more!

Events of the Weekend

Saturday we had a lazy morning at home and then had lunch at the Purple Onion.  This is the water fountain at the Purple Onion.

We went by Walmart to get some things tonight.  This was what the bread isle looked like due to this winter storm we are getting.  Funny thing is we probably won't get anything at all.

Smaller Than Expected

I finished piecing the center portion of the Christmas quilt, but I'm a little disappointed.  I was expecting it to be bigger, but apparently I didn't read the dimensions close enough.  This is suppose to be more like a lap quilt.  However, I am going to continue adding on star blocks at the top and bottom to extend it to queen size.
